Department Overview
The Building & Inspection Department of Michigan City is committed to ensuring the safety, integrity, and compliance of all structures within our community. We oversee inspections, code enforcement, permits, and licensing to uphold building standards and maintain a safe environment for residents, businesses, and visitors.
Our team works closely with homeowners, contractors, and developers to ensure that all construction, renovations, and property improvements meet Michigan City’s building codes and safety regulations. We provide clear guidance on permit applications, licensing requirements, and inspection procedures, making the building process as efficient and transparent as possible.
Additionally, we enforce city codes and ordinances, responding to complaints and violations to preserve neighborhood safety and quality of life. Whether you need a building permit, an inspection, or assistance with code compliance, the Building & Inspection Department is here to support responsible growth and development in Michigan City.
Building, Permits, & Inspections
The Inspection Department is responsible for issuing building permits and performing inspections for construction and remodeling projects within the city limits. Building inspectors determine the conditions of all types of dwellings (homes, apartments, offices, industrial centers, etc) by way of building inspections for the purpose of safeguarding the health and safety of the occupants and the general public.
Permits enable the city to enforce local ordinances and provisions of the Indiana Building Code. These ordinances and codes provide a minimum standard for the protection of life, health, property, and public welfare. Below, you will find various forms and applications for the City of Michigan City.
Code Enforcement
The Code Enforcement Division of the Planning & Inspection Department is charged with the duty of ensuring every building and yard in every neighborhood is maintained at a quality consistent with community standards and expectations. The division is responsible for enforcing City ordinances in an effort to promote and protect the public health, safety, and welfare of those individuals living, working, and doing business in Michigan City. Effective code enforcement needs the cooperation of every property owner and all tenants to build stable neighborhoods and community pride.

Historic District Overview
Michigan City’s Historic District regulations are designed to preserve the rich architectural heritage and unique character of our historic neighborhoods. These guidelines help protect buildings, structures, streetscapes, and landmarks that contribute to the city’s historical and cultural identity.
Any property located within the Historic District is subject to both standard zoning regulations and the additional requirements of the Historic District. These regulations ensure that new construction, renovations, or alterations maintain the architectural integrity and visual harmony of the area.
