Department Overview

The Workforce and Education Department serves as a vital bridge between education, employment, and economic opportunity in Michigan City. This department is dedicated to preparing residents for career success by aligning workforce development strategies with the city’s broader economic goals.

The department administers the Promise Scholarship Program, providing local students with access to higher education and career training. In partnership with the Economic Development Team, the department identifies and supports workforce initiatives that meet current and future employer needs.

Focused on advancing equitable access to good-paying jobs, the Workforce and Education Department actively seeks apprenticeship opportunities, builds partnerships with regional employers, and collaborates with institutions of higher education and trade programs. Its mission is to connect Michigan City residents with lifelong learning and career pathways that promote economic mobility and strengthen our local workforce.

Promise Scholarship

Michigan City Promise Scholarship offers up to $5,000 per year, renewable for 4 years, to eligible seniors who will be attending a regionally accredited college, university, post-secondary educational program, or vocational school in the State of Indiana.

The Michigan City Promise Scholarship applies to tuition and fees, including laboratory, student activity, and registration fees at regionally accredited colleges/universities/post-secondary programs in Indiana
