How We Serve
The Commission for Women consists of up to nine members.
Appointments
• Three members are appointed by the Mayor for a fixed term of four years; one appointment is initially for only two years, renewable for four more years upon reappointment by the mayor; one appointment is a representative of a non-profit or not-for-profit health-care agency, and one appointment is a representative from education;
• Two members are appointed by the common council for a fixed term of four years; one appointment is initially for only two years, renewable for four more years upon reappointment by the common council; one appointment is a representative of a non-profit organization dealing with women’s issues;
• One member is appointed by the Michigan City Chapter of the NAACP for a term of four years;
• One member is appointed by the LaPorte County Minority Health Coalition for a term of four years;
• One member is appointed by the LaPorte County League of Women Voters, for a term of four years, with the initial appointment for two years; and
• One member is appointed by the other eight members for a fixed term of four years.
No salary is paid to appointees for sitting on this board.
Meetings: The commission shall meet on a minimum quarterly basis and is subject to notice of such meetings pursuant to the Open Door Law of the State of Indiana. Meetings will be at 5:30 PM on the third Thursday of the month at the NECA/IBEW Community Center – the old Central School Building. 301 East 8th Street Suite 104. Michigan City, Indiana 46360.
