How We Serve
Formed in 2019, the Michigan City Sustainability Commission’s purpose is to inspire sustainable practices with our residents and in our community through engagement and with projects. The Sustainability Commission adopted the goal of reducing our carbon footprint by at least 50% in 2030. All initiatives and projects are linked to these three issues identified by a Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory—inadequate waste management, energy inefficient housing and buildings, and transportation pollution.
Project Teams include training solar panel installers, supporting solar panel installation on homes and businesses, designing solar panel installation for Washington Park and Zoo, exploring fleet replacement with compressed natural gas or electric vehicles, expanding recycling bin placement and engaging residents, reducing home and business’ carbon footprints via a subscription service, seeking city pollinator habitat certification, being recognized with a SolSmart Silver designation, inspiring new Sustainability Commissions and Advisory Boards statewide, and hosting an annual Earth Month Extravaganza.
Partners are NAACP LaPorte County Chapter’s Soul Power, Solar United Neighbors, Drive Clean Indiana, Carbon Neutral Indiana, Northwest Indiana Green Drinks, NWI Region Resilience, Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission, Indiana University Environmental Resilience, Indiana Office of Energy Development, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy, and National Wildlife Foundation.
Meetings: 4:30 PM on the second Thursday of the month at City Hall.
