“Michigan City Celebrates 190th Anniversary”

190 years ago today, Michigan City officially became a city — and what a journey it’s been. Over the decades, it has grown into a place shaped by hard work, strong roots, and a spirit that still lives on through its people today. From longtime residents to first-time visitors, Michigan City has always had a way of leaving a lasting impression on those lucky enough to experience what it has to offer.

Generations have watched this community evolve, carrying its history forward while confidently looking toward the future. That shared sense of progress continues to shape who we are and where we’re headed.

Reflecting on this milestone, Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch said:

“Michigan City’s 190th anniversary is a celebration of our people — the families, workers, dreamers, and leaders who built this community and continue to move it forward. We honor our history while staying focused on the opportunities ahead, because the best chapters of Michigan City’s story are still being written.”

As we mark this milestone year, we’ll be sharing a historical fun fact or flashback on social media each week to celebrate the moments, places, and people that helped shape Michigan City. Here’s to 190 years of history, hometown pride, and the people who make Michigan City what it is. Through our belief in each other and our community, anything is possible for the beautiful city we call home.
