Program Overview
As a result of the Clean Water Act, states must establish requirements for stormwater discharges from municipal and public separate storm sewer system (MS4) conveyances. These requirements are designed to protect public health, existing water uses, and aquatic life by reducing pollution carried by stormwater runoff.
The Michigan City Sanitary District manages stormwater runoff to protect our community’s drinking water, beaches, fish habitats, and recreational areas. Through the City’s Stormwater Management Ordinance (Ordinance No. 4770) and the MS4 Program, we work to:
- Prevent pollution from entering storm drains and waterways
- Regulate construction and redevelopment projects to control runoff
- Monitor and enforce proper stormwater practices across the city
- Educate residents and businesses on ways to help keep our water clean
Our program follows the requirements of the Clean Water Act and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) to ensure compliance and protect public health.
